Rising up over the coastline through God’s brilliant air
All in a shadowless blue,
One plane, then two
Who will be left behind when a thousand splintered voices?
Their graves are in the air

If her heart were marked she could speak in any tongue and make it herself clear
Beautiful lilies – so far, - so far –in a field
So Far from here

He was taught to desire high stakes paper
And hard ball deals pushed hard against the wall
But he never faced a wall of flame that tall
Or heard his named called
as tinder before wild fire

In a different kind of wilderness
He leaned into the cold glass corner window
And never loosened his tie
He saw a flash from the corner
The impact from the corner set him free

100 stories below
after churches, banks and cobblestones,
were covered with white poision
the river ran red
the river ran red
A gathering scream stampede

100 floors above
what can be done except look straight at each other
with a twisted haunted look for
a pillar of salt and declare whose guilte
Except the ones risking the collapsing cloud
Except who risk the risk is all over
Except those for whom the risk is never over
And memory is elastic and cushions the truth
What has been done
What has been done in his name

Fate jammed fear down his blood battered chest
Shoving his steps down to a racing stop
without tears to wash out fabled blindness
Cement dust and dry ash are nothing but
The sacraments of a murdering faith
A conspiracy of dead believers
a divided brotherhood
done in whose name
his

The elevators were jammed full
Out of sync and then jammed closed again
He got stuck on 97 one night years ago
And heard 1,000 voices there
and swore
not to be stranded or scared again

the lamp on the desk behind him flashed and burned
three times the phone rang
it was his wife - half of his life
crying and home alone
He crumpled yesterday’s memos like so much junk

She could hear the sirens on the phone
And screaming everywhere
Where in God’s name is the rescue crew
Thank God they just arrived
Now get out of there

He never noticed the blue deep
Blue in his assistant’s eyes
And he asked her as if she had no business crying
Would she care to be dancing or dying

The boardroom TV blasted news floor by floor
The market falling dime by dime

He felt the window give
for good in God’s name?
What has been done in his name?
Is this a test, it is it
It is not a beautiful blue and terrible game

wings swept back as the pilot climbs
through the crisp September sky
and shattered the glass to give him life

A news chopper photo of her
Unthinkable helpless & news worthy
He saw the real threat –
And the pearls around her throat
He said under his breath
This is the serious shit forgive me
He was standing on a desk smashing windows
open with a chair

Frightend to death of at least forced to think so

Twin Turbines screaming
Thank God a split second can’t last?
Nothing clever- worth saying
Sound so loud it drowned itself out

Dust and cries from the rubble rained
The way a Roman candle furiously burns
Dark smoking for days after days
Where fire fights fire and gravity rules
She cut her hands on the broken glass
As he lost his balance in a shift of wind and a cloud of ash
Has God has done this in anyone’s name
What God has done?
What God
Is this a test
it is it is not
All in a beautiful blue
