VIGIL

If you like folk music, Vigil is an important CD for your collection. Vigil draws together diverse voices from the Greenwich Village Songwriter's Exchange reacting to 9/11. It's an important reminder that we all have different feelings about what happened "on a clear day" in September 2001. It also reminds us that poetry seemed the only form capable of capturing our feelings after 9/11. Vigil puts poetic lyrics to music, carrying on the folk tradition of chronicling historic moments.

"How is New York doing?" was a question contributor Suzanne Vega heard often as she toured the country last fall. When she returned to the Songwriter's Exchange, an informal group of musicians, poets, and songwriters, she found many crafting words and music. Vigil was born to let the country know how "on the streets New Yorkers" were coping.

At its best, which is consistently often, Vigil is real good folk music. Simply produced, these unpretentious songs share intimacies: How it feels to lose a brother (Jack Hardy), comfort a friend (Tim Robinson), fear separation from a loved one (Wendy Beckerman). Vigil doesn't blink at ambivalence, describing the complicated feelings of personal loss vs. patriotic zealousness (Suzanne Vega), and attempting to put the shoe on the other foot (Dawn Landes and Jon Albrink). It even uses humor quite effectively (Bob Hillman). Seventeen artists contribute twenty tracks ending with a poem by Frank Tedesco to punctuate the poetic foundation of the project.

Canio's Books is honored to be the only "bricks & mortar" store offering this important work to the community. It came together in an ordinary shop moment: a customer asking if we carried local artists' CDs. Yes. Would we be interested in Vigil? Absolutely. Vigil is a natural fit with our wall of poetry and our planned commemorative events. The proceeds from sales of Vigil go to The Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund.
